1931 年出生於美國密西西比州，1933 年舉家搬到芝加哥，原名 Samuel Cook 的 Sam Cooke (1931 年 1 月 22 日-1964 年 12 月 11 日)，小時候即展現出過人的歌唱天份。9 歲時與兄弟姐妹組了一個名叫 The Singing Children 的演唱團體，成為他歌唱事業的開端。14歲加入福音團體 The Highway Q.C.'s，高中畢業後進入 The Soul Stirrers 開始磨練音樂才能。到了 1950 年 Sam Cooke 取代 R.H. Harris 成為樂團領頭者，The Soul Stirrers 也在他的帶領下與 Specialty Records 簽約並於 1951 年發行首張唱片《Jesus Gave Me Water》，此時 Sam Cooke 也開始自行創作，並陸續發表數張福音歌曲唱片，廣受當時青少年喜愛。1957 年 Sam Cooke 加入 Keen Records，同年 9 月發表首張冠軍單曲唱片《You Send Me》，在當時分別蟬聯節奏藍調排行榜冠軍 6 週與流行排行榜冠軍3週，而如此經典的作品，更入選搖滾名人堂五百大最重要搖滾樂錄音之一，以及滾石雜誌五百大經典歌曲第 115 名。4 年後 Sam Cooke 成立起自己的唱片公司 SAR Records，旗下包含 Bobby Womack、Johnnie Taylor 等知名歌手，而他自己則轉投 RCA Victor 唱片。並在 1960 年發表單曲《Chain Gang》，成為 Sam Cooke 第二張暢銷大熱之作。其後，Sam Cooke 也接連交出〈Sad Mood〉、〈Cupid〉、〈Bring it on Home to Me〉、〈Twistin' the Night Away〉等暢銷佳作，打造出 29 首流行音樂榜 Top 40 單曲，其中多為節奏藍調音樂上榜佳作。而本套 3CD 精選蒐羅了 Sam Cooke 從 1951 年領軍 The Soul Stirrers 到 1962 年個人音樂生涯的 72 首金曲佳作，而這些作品亦是在他早逝短暫的人生中所留給後人的音樂獻禮。
